How We Research & Rate Coffee Machines

This page explains, step by step, how a machine ends up recommended on Coffee Machine For Home โ€” and what we deliberately don't claim. Transparency about the process matters more to us than sounding more authoritative than we are.

1. Specification comparison

For every machine we cover, we start from the manufacturer's published specifications: brewing method, pump or extraction pressure where relevant, grinder type (burr vs blade, if fitted), milk system (manual wand vs automatic), water tank and bean hopper capacity, and footprint dimensions. These form the backbone of the specs shown in our comparison table.

2. Live pricing and availability

Every "Check price" link on this site routes to a live Amazon UK search for that specific machine, rather than a static price we might forget to update. The price ranges quoted in our guides are indicative bands based on typical UK retail pricing at time of writing โ€” always treat the live Amazon listing as the source of truth, since prices move frequently, especially around sale events.

3. Aggregated review analysis

We factor in publicly visible review volume and star-rating averages as a proxy for real-world reliability and satisfaction โ€” a machine with thousands of consistent 4.5+ star reviews across years tells you something that a manufacturer spec sheet can't. We weight this against known category patterns (for example, manual espresso machines tend to have more variance in reviews because outcomes depend heavily on user technique, which we account for in how we frame recommendations for beginners vs enthusiasts).

4. Category-fit scoring

Our coffee machine quiz scores four factors โ€” milk drink frequency, how hands-on you want to be, budget, and household size โ€” against machine category (bean-to-cup, pod, espresso, filter). This scoring logic runs entirely in your browser; we don't collect or store your quiz answers.

5. What we don't claim

We want to be direct about the limits of this process:

  • We do not run every machine through in-house lab testing (extraction timing, temperature stability under load, long-term durability trials). Sites that claim this for dozens of machines across every price bracket are rarely doing so rigorously either โ€” treat such claims with healthy skepticism.
  • Taste is subjective. Our guides describe consensus patterns from aggregated reviews and known brewing-method characteristics, not a single tester's palate presented as universal fact.
  • Prices and specific models change. We revisit and update guides periodically, but the live retailer listing always overrides anything printed in an article.

6. Corrections

If you spot a spec error, an outdated price band, or a discontinued model still listed as current, we want to know โ€” see our About page for how this site is run and funded. We'd rather fix a mistake than leave it live for the sake of appearing infallible.
